It’s Friday again! We hope you have a good weekend.

Roving Reports weekly summary

Book Week – Let’s get reading

Book Week Scotland is an annual celebration of books and reading that takes place across the country. Book Week Scotland 2021 will take place 15–21 November. We hope to create a buzz about books in Edenside during this week, igniting (or perhaps re-igniting) a passion for reading in whatever shape or form, throughout the school! One of the main aims of Book Week Scotland is to share and enjoy books with children.

To celebrate Scottish Book Week children (and their families) are invited to share with us your most ‘extreme reading’ experiences! Show us your creativity and adventurous side by sharing a photo of you reading in a most obscure, unusual or safely adventurous location! Parents or carers take and share your photo on class Facebook pages. Classes will vote on their ‘top 2’ on Thursday, November 18th, and the top photos will be shared with Mr Bewsey for final judgement. 5 winners and 5 runners up will be announced during our assembly on November 19th.

BIG Question time

With COP26 drawing to a close, our BIG question focus moves from climate change to food! We’ll be asking the question ‘Where does our food come from?’. This is a great question to ask when we live in the Borders because so much of our food is grown on our doorstep! But how much do we really know about how it gets from ‘farm to fork’? Who else is involved? Where does it go? And at what cost?

Breakfast Club

We continue to offer our Breakfast club option for all P1-7 children. Available from 8am every week day, children can have breakfast and chat with friends. Every member gets a goodie bag of books and activities to make the time together as fun and meaningful as possible. It costs £2 per child, per day but anyone entitled to Free School Meals is exempt. If you’d like to find out more, just get in touch.

Attendance update

As Headteacher of Edenside, one of my responsibilities is to ensure our children attend school as much as they possibly can. Across all schools in the Borders, we hope to see children at school for at least 95% of their school days; anything less than 95% begins to cause concern. Whilst we know that there are always reasons for a child to not be in school (and COVID has a big part to play in this at the moment), we still want every child to be in school as much as possible. Please do all you can to send your child to school, unless they are genuinely unwell, displaying symptoms of COVID-19 or have tested positive for COVID-19. If you are experiencing any difficulties in getting your child to school in the mornings, please get in touch and we will do everything we can to help you.

COVID vigilance

Please take a moment to note the following important points:

  • Continue to be vigilant in identifying symptoms in your child (temperature, new continuous cough, change in sense of taste or smell). If your child shows any of these, please keep them off school and get them tested.
  • When awaiting test results, your child will need to remain at home, hopefully just for 24 hours, until the test result comes through. If the test result is negative, your child can come back to school.
  • If your child gets a positive test result, they will need to isolate for 10 days. In this event, we will provide a ‘home learning’ work pack, if your child is well enough to complete it. This is a support not an expectation.
  • If anyone else in your household tests positive for COVID 19, please contact us at school to discuss the possible implications for your child.
